Umi Arts

Exhibitions

Group and solo exhibitions held in the UMI Arts gallery form an important component of the professional skills development of our members. These exhibitions include:

You and Me Emerging Artist Exhibition

UMI Arts begins the yearly art program with our You and Me exhibition which is specifically targeted at emerging level artists who require further development in their art practice. Some artists who have participated in the Exhibition Ready program will also be invited to display their works in the You and Me exhibition as a means of gaining experience and confidence. The expected outcome of the You and Me program will be an opportunity for emerging, mid-career, and established artists (Lisa is this right) to exhibit their new artworks together in an exhibition that fosters inter-generational learning and sharing of cultural traditions, techniques and stories.

Exhibition Ready

The Exhibition Ready program is a 6-week program designed for emerging and mid-career level artists wanting to exhibit work, learn about curating an exhibition and establish a stronger profile in the visual arts sector. Our UMI Arts’ curator will work closely with each participant in one-on-one and group mentoring sessions to provide professional development and skill straining in all aspects of preparing and presenting a solo exhibition of new works. The program content is interactive and culturally appropriate to each participant and delves into their inspiration, cultural connections and community environment. The program extends to learning sessions in public galleries, museums, retail outlets, exhibitions, events and festivals. The expected outcome of the program will be an opportunity for emerging and mid-career artists to exhibit their new artworks, gain valuable curatorial skills, and establish a profile in the visual arts industry.

Freshwater Saltwater Exhibition

‘Freshwater Saltwater’ is an annual curated group exhibition at UMI Arts showcasing our mid-career and established member artists. The title reflects a metaphorical ideology of mainland Aboriginal custodians mostly connected to ‘freshwater’ and Torres Strait Islanders who are surrounded by ‘saltwater’. The title acknowledges the association Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with freshwater and saltwater in Far North Queensland.

Summer Show

The Summer Show is a curated exhibition at UMI Arts, showcasing the rich artistic diversity of all UMI Arts member artists. This exhibition is to particularly showcase artist works who are experimenting with new techniques and adapting their artistic direction. The theme for the exhibition is “Portable and Affordable” and is held at the end of the year, so we strongly encourage works that hang together in a series and/or are appropriate as gifts, such as Pottery, Jewellery, Wood carvings, Artefacts or Fibre work.
