Excerpt from the book:

“We are Guugu Yimithirr Warra people. Our language is Guugu Yimithir. Why do we make a booklet about weaving? It is like this. We all remember the old people who used to roll string on their legs and make baskets but we have had to teach ourselves these things. The ancient skills of waving from the bush – using grass, pandanus, lawyer cane and later, sisal hemp – these things were lost in our time.
Those old ladies, our grandmothers and great grandmothers who we remember rolling the string and making baskets, had hard lives. Many of them were stolen children, taken from their hoe country ad sen to the Hope Vale mission at Cape Bedford. When this happened, culture was lost…
We are starting again to learn these old sills so we can pass this knowledge on to our children and grandchildren. This is our journey. These are our stories which need to be told.”
